About RVS
Racetrack Veterinary Services is an independent equine veterinary practice based on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Established in 2014, RVS is led and run by our principal veterinarian and provides highly personalised veterinary care without the structure of a large corporate group.
Our caseload includes thoroughbred and standardbred racehorses, performance and sport horses, pleasure horses and ponies. We work closely with leading racing and equestrian clients across the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne and throughout Victoria, with a strong focus on personal relationships and continuity of care.
Our patients range from elite racehorses and Grand Prix showjumpers and dressage horses through to young horses, broodmares, retirees, very slow racehorses and metabolically challenged ponies.
We also undertake FEI veterinary work and value good veterinary medicine, practical decision-making, professional relationships, teamwork and having a life outside work.
Description of the Position
We are looking for an enthusiastic Equine Veterinarian to join our established ambulatory equine practice.
This role may suit a recent equine internship graduate or a veterinarian with a few years of post-graduate experience who is looking to develop their career in equine practice.
You will be exposed to a varied caseload across racing, performance and general equine medicine, with opportunities to develop skills and experience in lameness, diagnostic imaging, pre-purchase examinations, endoscopy, racehorse medicine, performance-horse practice and FEI work.
We are happy to support relevant continuing education and professional development, including guidance and exposure toward FEI veterinary work.
Rather than fitting the right person into a rigid position description, we are interested in finding someone who will be a good fit for our practice and whose interests and career goals align with what we do.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide ambulatory veterinary care to a varied equine caseload.
- Undertake routine equine health care, vaccination, identification, microchipping and preventative medicine.
- Perform lameness examinations and diagnostic workups.
- Use digital radiography and ultrasound as appropriate.
- Conduct pre-purchase examinations.
- Undertake yearling and sales radiography, including survey and repository work.
- Perform upper airway and dynamic endoscopy where appropriate.
- Undertake gastroscopy and gastrointestinal investigations.
- Perform blood sampling, testing and case management.
- Provide veterinary care to racehorses and performance horses.
- Participate in FEI and high-performance events depending on experience and interest.
- Develop treatment and rehabilitation plans.
- Respond to emergency and urgent veterinary cases.
- Communicate effectively with owners, trainers, riders and the veterinary team.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and appropriate case follow-up.
Depending on your experience and interests, there may also be opportunities for interstate work, major yearling sales, FEI-related work and performance medicine.
Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience
- Recognised veterinary qualification.
- Eligible for veterinary registration in Victoria.
- Genuine interest in equine veterinary medicine.
- Confidence and competence in handling horses.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team.
- Sound clinical judgement and a willingness to continue developing professionally.
- Current driver's licence or eligibility to obtain one.
Previous equine experience is highly regarded but is not essential. The role may suit an equine internship graduate or a veterinarian with several years of experience.
Racing, performance-horse and FEI experience is advantageous but not essential. RVS can assist with continuing education, mentoring and exposure to FEI veterinary work for the right candidate.
Roster & After-Hours Requirements
The position includes participation in a shared after-hours roster.
The roster is generally manageable compared with traditional equine veterinary practices due to the nature of our professional racing and performance clients.
Routine stable activity often finishes relatively early, and genuine out-of-hours calls are limited. The shared roster is designed to support a sustainable workload and a healthy work-life balance.
Salary & Remuneration
Competitive remuneration will be negotiated based on experience, qualifications, skills and the agreed working arrangement.
The overall package will be discussed with the successful candidate and can be tailored according to experience and circumstances.
