Shockwave Therapy in Horses

What is it?

Also known as Extra-Corporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), this therapy is used for both soft tissue and bony injuries. The treatment is scientifically backed and effective with immediate results. A hand-held device generating pressure waves is used on the damaged area with an ultrasound gel over it. As a complying agent, sedatives are used to lessen any adverse reaction to the sound and initial sensation of the treatment.

Conditions

Shockwave therapy is administered to treat the following conditions:

  • Injuries to suspensory ligaments (fore and hind limbs)
  • Other ligament and tendon injuries
  • Sacroiliac pain
  • Kissing spines
  • Lumbosacral pain
  • Navicular syndrome/caudal heel syndrome/caudal foot syndrome
  • Non-union fractures treatment e.g accessory carpal bone, pedal/coffin bone, sesamoids
  • Bone spavin
  • Stress fractures
  • Splints
  • Non-healing wounds
  • Sesamoiditis
  • Bone spavin treatment
  • Arthritis
  • Tendon injuries
  • Bucked shins/shin soreness
  • Neck pain

Benefits

Results

Exact results vary depending on the nature and condition of the tissues that are been treated.

  • Increased formation of collagen fibrils
  • Mature and parallel collagen fibres
  • Increased new blood supply
  • Tissue proliferation
  • Fast reduction in inflammation

Though the horse recovers speedily, they must have a rest period for the treatment to be long lasting after the sessions are completed before they are ready to go back on track.

What Are the Devices Used for Shockwave Therapy?

The vets at Racetrack Veterinary Services use two types of shockwave therapy devices.

  • Radial shockwave modality
  • Focused shockwave modality

The latter generates a unique waveform that is more powerful than radial machines. This uses a potentially lower dose of the wave. However, the vets look into the severity of the issue and then decide what would be the best for treatment. All devices used by our vets for the treatment is specifically and specially designed to be used on horses.
